Valve has introduced a useful performance monitor for Steam users. This new tool helps gamers understand how well their games are running. It not only tracks the overall frame rate but also shows how many frames come from technologies like Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR.

Currently, this feature is part of a Steam Client update that’s primarily for Windows users and popular GPU setups. Users can choose from four detail levels: a simple FPS value, detailed FPS information, CPU and GPU usage, or comprehensive metrics including “FPS, CPU, GPU & RAM Full Details.” The more information you choose, the more screen space it will take up.

Before this, Steam only had a basic FPS counter. Now, it separates generated frames from those fully rendered by the graphics card. This distinction is important because it tells gamers whether a game feels smooth because of actual performance or because of techniques that create "fake frames." Valve explains that while frame generation can enhance visuals, it doesn’t reduce input lag, an essential factor for competitive gamers.

One anticipated benefit of this tool is clarity. If a game appears to run at 30 FPS, the monitor can confirm whether that’s genuinely how it performs or just a result of enhanced visuals. This discussion is ongoing in the PC gaming community, and Valve remains neutral in the debate.
