Millikin University has appointed Dr. Dean Pribbenow as its 17th President, starting July 1, 2025. He takes over from Acting President Mary Black, who has been in the role since March.
Dr. Pribbenow has over 20 years of experience in higher education, having previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Elmhurst University. He is dedicated to student-centered education and community engagement. His vision aligns perfectly with Millikin’s focus on hands-on learning.
In his own words, Pribbenow expressed excitement about collaborating with students, staff, and the Decatur community. He aims to strengthen ties through partnerships that foster growth and meaningful contributions. “Millikin is a place where students are challenged to grow, lead, and contribute meaningfully to the world,” he said.
In addition to Pribbenow’s appointment, the university’s Board of Trustees has welcomed Dr. Kathy Thomforde as its first female Chair. Thomforde emphasized the importance of leadership as a calling and noted the intentional commitment she and Pribbenow share towards Millikin.
A notable expert opinion comes from Dr. Jonathan H. Basser, a leader in educational research, who believes that hiring a president with extensive community ties can greatly enhance a university’s impact. "Leadership that prioritizes connection with local communities not only benefits students but also enriches regional development," Basser stated.
In a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, over 70% of students indicated that strong community partnerships significantly contribute to their overall academic experience. This statistic highlights the importance of Pribbenow’s approach to leadership.
Pribbenow’s early agenda includes meeting with Millikin’s senior leadership and engaging with local community leaders, emphasizing collaboration as key to success. His vision aims to build a strong future for the university, reinforcing its longstanding tradition of performance learning.
These changes are a part of a broader shift in higher education, where community engagement and student-focused initiatives are becoming increasingly crucial. In the coming weeks, Pribbenow and Thomforde will discuss their visions on Brian Byers’ radio program, offering insights into their plans for Millikin’s future.
