In Gorakhpur, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the importance of traditional Indian healthcare systems for a healthier nation. She spoke at the launch of Uttar Pradesh’s first AYUSH University, the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University. The President noted, “For India to become a ‘vishwaguru’ by 2047, we must ensure that every citizen is healthy.”
President Murmu emphasized the need to blend traditional practices with modern medicine. “We should embrace Ayurvedic lifestyles along with conventional treatments,” she said. Institutions like the new university are expected to advance education and healthcare in the region.
The university, which cost Rs 268 crore to build, will collaborate with around 100 AYUSH colleges. Its focus on research aims to align traditional practices with international standards. This could enhance the credibility of AYUSH systems globally.
Murmu mentioned how yoga, promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a vital practice for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. She pointed out that yoga could potentially reduce the average sleep needed from eight hours to just three.
Since 2014, both central and state governments have established dedicated departments to promote AYUSH systems. The President expressed confidence that this university will boost the acceptance of traditional medicine worldwide.
Historically, Gorakhpur has played a key role in India’s spiritual and independence movements, with roots tracing back to 18th-century monks who fought for social justice. This legacy of resilience continues to inspire the region today.
Such institutions not only celebrate India’s rich traditions but also serve as platforms for modern innovation in healthcare. As society grapples with various health challenges, a balanced approach could pave the way for a healthier future.
