How a University of New Haven Student Journalist Captured First Place in a Writing Contest: A Journey of Passion and Perseverance

Recently, I won first place in the column category of the Connecticut Society for Professional Journalists’ Writing Contest. The piece I submitted, titled “Cardinal,” reflects on how I feel connected to my deceased loved ones whenever I see these birds.

This piece started as an extra-credit assignment in my interpretive and editorial writing class. I didn’t have to write it, but something pushed me to share this personal story. Writing about my family brought me comfort and helped me keep their memories alive.

When I learned I had won, I was taking a walk with my mother at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven, Connecticut. We’ve made it a tradition to walk there weekly. We stroll about a mile, starting at my grandfather’s grave. His passing sparked my belief that cardinals symbolize my loved ones watching over me. To win the contest while visiting his grave felt significant. It seemed like a sign that he is proud of my journey.

Writing has always been my passion. It’s something my mother loves, too. As a child, I eagerly read my stories during English classes. After receiving a ukulele for my 13th birthday, I began writing songs and filling journals with poems about my feelings during middle and high school. However, as I progressed, I started doubting my skills compared to my classmates, making me shy about sharing my work.

College journalism changed that. Winning this award confirmed I’m on the right path. It reminds me that my thoughts and experiences matter. I realized not every story has to be unique; relatability is powerful. Sometimes, readers simply want to feel understood.

Other writers’ stories might seem more compelling, but I’ve learned that tapping into shared emotions can often resonate more deeply. Writing that evokes nostalgia or universal feelings has a special impact.

As I navigate my career in communications, this experience reinforces my belief in the power of authentic storytelling. The connections we make through writing can bridge gaps and bring comfort to both the writer and the reader.
