How Tamil Nadu is Reviving Kariyachalli Island: The Race to Save Our Shores with 8,500 Artificial Reefs

The Tamil Nadu government is launching a project to save Kariyachalli Island, which is sinking in the Gulf of Mannar. This region is ecologically sensitive, home to vital marine life and coral reefs. The initiative, called TNSHORE (Tamil Nadu Sustainably Harnessing Ocean Resources), aims to start in August 2025. It plans to restore the coral reefs, plant seagrass, and boost marine biodiversity.

Kariyachalli is one of 21 islands in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, located between Rameswaram and Thoothukudi. This area features one of India’s major coral reefs. Sadly, the island has lost over 70% of its landmass since 1969, shrinking from about 20.85 hectares to just under six hectares by 2024, according to research from IIT Madras.

Currently, the island’s size fluctuates between 3.14 hectares and 4.12 hectares, depending on the tide. Supriya Sahu, the additional chief secretary of the Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, highlighted the urgency of the situation. Coral bleaching has affected about a third of the area’s coral, making it more susceptible to erosion. If this trend continues, scientists warn that Kariyachalli could be completely submerged by 2036.
