Discovering Coastal Changes: New Surveys Reveal Impact of Storms on Our Shorelines

Christchurch City Council is taking action to understand how storms are changing its coastline. They’ve launched a new survey using a helicopter equipped with special radar to map the area from the Waimakariri River to Southshore Spit.

This initial flight is just the beginning. Future surveys will zoom in on locations like New Brighton Pier and various surf clubs. Jane Morgan, who leads the Coastal Hazards Adaptation Planning team, emphasizes that understanding how storms affect beaches and dunes is crucial. “Monitoring storm impacts will help us see how coastal areas erode and recover over time,” she explains.

The data will reveal which parts of the coast face the highest risk of erosion and flooding. This information can guide decisions on beach management and restorative efforts, ensuring that the coastline is better prepared for future storms.

The survey employs Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. This method produces accurate surface maps by collecting thousands of data points every square meter. Future surveys will use drones to capture data before and after storms, helping assess their effects on coastal areas.

To enhance their monitoring, the Council is partnering with the University of Canterbury. Staff and students will measure environmental factors like wind and waves during storm events. This collaboration aims to create one of the most detailed coastal data sets in New Zealand.

Interestingly, Environment Canterbury has been monitoring the coast since 1990. This new program builds on that foundation, showcasing a commitment to understanding and preserving the coastline amid ongoing climate challenges.
