As we get closer to Independence Day, many at NASA are navigating changes together. It’s a time to reflect and appreciate the dedication everyone shows in supporting our mission.

This holiday gives us a chance to think about the freedoms that define our nation—freedoms that allow us to explore. At NASA, we channel our love for discovery into every project, pushing boundaries for everyone’s benefit. It’s also a moment to honor those who have served and sacrificed for our freedoms. It reminds me of what public service truly means, especially in these uncertain times.

This year, I’ve encouraged our leadership to dismiss NASA staff early on July 3. I hope this extra time allows you to relax and enjoy moments with family and friends, reflecting on the day’s significance.

Here are a few recent highlights from NASA:

• Astronaut Anil Menon has been assigned to his first space mission, set for June 2026. He will serve as a flight engineer on Expedition 75, working on research that aims to benefit both space exploration and life on Earth.
• To ensure safer air travel, researchers recently conducted tests at NASA Langley, dropping a full-scale aircraft body to study how its materials can absorb crash energy. This data will help design better air taxis for our urban skies.
• Nasa is partnering with Netflix to bring NASA+ programming to their platform this summer. This will showcase launches, spacewalks, and mission updates to a global audience of over 700 million. Meanwhile, NASA+ continues to be available for free on its app and website.
• The Earth Science Disasters response team is providing satellite imagery to assist with wildfire and landslide recovery efforts in New Mexico. This data supports both evacuation planning and ongoing recovery tasks.
• NASA recently recognized three university engineering teams in our Human Lander Challenge, which focuses on advancing technologies for deep space exploration.
