Gov. Andy Beshear is urging Kentucky employers to take advantage of a free occupational safety and health survey from the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Program, or KYSAFE. This initiative aims to help businesses create safer workplaces while also protecting their finances.
In 2024, 531 employers in Kentucky requested these surveys. Why? To spot potential hazards in their workplaces before they become severe issues. During these inspections, KYSAFE consultants uncovered nearly 5,000 safety risks that could have affected over 96,000 Kentucky workers. By addressing these risks, businesses avoided more than $26 million in potential fines due to safety violations.
Gov. Beshear emphasizes the importance of this program: “We’re committed to ensuring our workers have a safe and healthy environment while allowing businesses to thrive. This free service is beneficial for everyone. Employers can identify and fix hazards without worrying about penalties, and employees get the assurance that their workplace is safer.”
These surveys are more than just a formality. Experienced consultants look for various hazards, including machine safety, electrical risks, fire prevention, and air quality. If business owners agree to fix any serious issues, they can avoid financial penalties altogether.
