Washington State University Tri-Cities has rolled out a new year-long Brewing Certificate Program. This initiative aims to help people step into the brewing world.

The program is designed for a broad range of participants—homebrewers, beer enthusiasts considering a career switch, and anyone looking to join the brewing industry. Located by the Columbia River in northern Richland, WSU Tri-Cities is one of the six campuses of Washington State University.

Most of the courses will be online, but students will also attend two hands-on brewing camps in Yakima and Spokane. These camps will provide real experience with commercial brewing equipment, guided by industry experts.

Jean Dodson Peterson from WSU Tri-Cities highlights the area’s vibrant craft beverage culture, saying, “Tri-Cities is a dynamic community with a good mix of craft brews and wineries. It’s a great setting for food and drink education.”

This program focuses on both the science and art of brewing. Peterson notes that students will learn about ingredient selection, fermentation, quality control, and production management. “Our curriculum emphasizes real-world experience, preparing graduates to jump straight into brewing jobs,” she says.

Interestingly, the online format is designed to attract students from across Washington and beyond. Peterson mentions, “This accessibility makes it easier for anyone interested to pursue brewing education, no matter where they live.”

Graduates of the program can look forward to various career opportunities in craft breweries, brewpubs, and related businesses. In recent years, the brewing industry has seen a drive to reinvest in skills training, particularly for creating no- and low-alcohol beers. This trend highlights the growing need for talent in a sector that is adapting to changing consumer preferences.

According to a recent report from the Brewers Association, the craft beer industry has shown resilience even as it works through challenges. The association noted a 5% increase in production in the latest year, with more than 8,000 breweries operating across the country.
