WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is all set to launch a yearlong celebration for America’s 250th birthday. The festivities kick off this Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, at the State Fairgrounds. Expected highlights include stunning displays celebrating American history, musical acts, and a fireworks show, according to U.S. Ambassador Monica Crowley.

This celebration aims to bring people together in a time of deep political division. Just like past significant events in American history, like the 1976 bicentennial celebrations, organizers see this as a chance to bridge the country’s partisan gaps. Crowley emphasized that the location symbolizes unity, as Iowa lies at the country’s heart.

“We’ve experienced so much division over the last few years. This celebration is about renewing civic pride and shared values,” she shared.

A Gallup poll reflects this division, revealing a widening gap in patriotism. Only about one-third of Democrats report being proud to be American, while nearly 90% of Republicans feel the opposite. An AP-NORC poll from June indicated that only 40% of adults approve of Trump’s presidency, with 60% disapproving. Interestingly, many Americans perceived a military parade for the 250th anniversary as an unnecessary use of funds.

Reflecting on history, Crowley connected today’s political climate to the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal during the 1976 celebration, which aimed to heal the nation. “That was a critical moment, and I believe we can do the same now,” she stated optimistically.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking the colonies’ break from Great Britain. “This 250-year celebration is a moment for all Americans to honor our history and look toward the future,” Crowley added.

Trump expressed excitement for the upcoming festivities. He initially hinted at a “Great American State Fair” back in May 2023, which seems to have sparked local support from Iowa leaders. The main event will take place next year in Washington, D.C., but the celebrations will kick off in Iowa.

During the event, attendees can expect performances from artists like Lee Greenwood, famous for “God Bless the USA,” a staple at Trump rallies. The lineup also includes Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, adding to the patriotic atmosphere.
