Kogi Assembly Unveils Exciting Tree Planting Initiative to Combat Climate Change: Join the Green Movement!

Kogi State is taking important steps to combat climate change with a new tree-planting campaign. This initiative aims to promote a healthier environment and address deforestation issues.

At the launch event, Speaker Umar Yusuf highlighted the campaign’s significance. He stressed the need for a safe and sustainable environment for everyone, stating, “Climate change has led to erosion and other environmental problems. We want to inspire communities to take care of our land.” He believes tree planting can help restore ecological balance.

Yusuf also pointed out the seriousness of deforestation and environmental degradation. “As leaders, we need to advocate for tree planting. It’s our responsibility to promote land reclamation,” he said. He urged the Ministry of Agriculture’s forestry department to enforce existing laws against illegal tree cutting more strictly.

Experts agree that tree planting plays a vital role in mitigating climate change. According to a recent survey by the Global Forest Watch, the world lost nearly 10 million hectares of tree cover in 2021 alone. Initiatives like Kogi’s can significantly contribute to global efforts to curb this trend.

Additionally, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project is supporting these efforts. It helps farmers grow economic tree species, which not only aids in land restoration but also boosts food security. “We’ve seen positive developments across the state where farmers are cultivating these trees,” Yusuf noted.

This campaign will extend throughout all local government areas, involving communities, environmental groups, and government agencies. With collective efforts, Kogi State is aiming for a greener future.
