Nebraska officials are warning the public about dangerous blue-green algae found at Glenn Cunningham Lake. Recent tests showed levels of microcystin, a harmful toxin from these algae, exceeding safe limits.

The Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment (NDEE) reported that samples taken earlier this week revealed toxins above the 8 parts per billion threshold. To keep the community safe, NDEE has been sampling 56 public lakes, especially popular swimming areas, since May. They will continue this monitoring through the end of September.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) can develop quickly, sometimes between the time of testing and reporting. This means algae may be present even if a lake hasn’t been recently tested. If you’re at any lake and notice neon green, pea green, or reddish-brown water, or see foam or scum on the surface, it’s best to steer clear.

These algae can cause skin irritations, such as rashes and blisters. More serious symptoms from exposure include headaches, nausea, and even severe liver issues in extreme cases. According to the NDEE, how sick a person gets depends on the toxin levels and the amount of contaminated water consumed.

Interestingly, early research suggests that fish caught in these contaminated lakes are not significantly affected by the toxins. This means fishing is still allowed at health alert lakes, but caution is always advisable.
