The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) has a new leader. On July 3, 2025, Secretary Brooke Rollins appointed Dr. Justin Ransom as the new FSIS Administrator. He takes over from Dr. Denise Eblen, who will now serve as Deputy Administrator.
Dr. Ransom brings over 20 years of experience in food safety and quality. He has held key roles at major companies like Tyson Foods and McDonald’s. Early in his career, he worked with the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service, helping to set standards for the National School Lunch Program.
With a background in agriculture and animal science—holding both a master’s and a Ph.D.—Dr. Ransom is well-prepared for his new role. His experience in food systems is crucial as he steps into leadership at FSIS.
Before Dr. Ransom, Dr. Eblen served as FSIS Administrator from December 2024 to July 2025. During her time, she focused on using science to improve inspection strategies and policies, all aimed at enhancing public health.
Both Dr. Ransom and Dr. Eblen will collaborate to modernize the agency and ensure the food supply remains safe and reliable. Food safety is more important than ever, especially as recent studies show that foodborne illnesses still significantly impact public health. According to the CDC, 48 million Americans get sick from foodborne diseases each year.
As they take on these challenges, Dr. Ransom’s leadership may also reflect a growing trend in the food industry towards greater transparency and sustainability, aligning with consumer expectations for health and safety.
