Severe I-70 Westbound Closure Near Eisenhower Tunnel: Deadly Multi-Car Crash and Fire Update

A tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred on I-70 near the Eisenhower Tunnel, leading to a significant fire and the closure of westbound lanes near mile marker 218. The Colorado State Patrol reported that drivers are facing an extended delay. Motorists are being turned around at Beaver Brook and advised to avoid travel west from Denver.

Involving both a semi-truck and a Ram truck hauling a trailer, the accident resulted in the death of the Ram truck’s driver, who was found alongside a dog. Fortunately, the semi-truck driver escaped injuries.

Many holiday travelers became stuck due to the closure. While some turned back, others decided to wait it out, socializing or walking their pets while traffic remained at a standstill. A traveler named Craig Walker mentioned waiting wasn’t too bad since they had their camper for comfort.

This unfortunate incident adds to a troubling trend. In the last two days, there have been four fatalities on I-70. A previous crash involved a Subaru rear-ending a semi-truck, leading to three deaths—two children and a woman from Montana.
