Heritage University Celebrates Milestone with Inauguration of Inspiring Fourth President

On Tuesday, Dr. Chris Gilmer became the fourth president of Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington. With experience leading other universities, he’s eager to start this new chapter.

He discovered the position through a friend who thought it was a perfect fit for him. “When I read the job description, I felt the same way,” Dr. Gilmer shared. He relates to the students’ experiences, having grown up in a rural and economically challenged environment.

“I understand what it’s like to dream big in a small town,” he said. This shared background is what drew him to Heritage University.

Dr. Gilmer aims to ensure that students have access to all necessary resources for success. While he doesn’t plan on making drastic changes right away, he wants to raise awareness and funds for the university, extending its reach beyond Washington. “I want to bring resources into this small community,” he explained.

Before taking the helm at Heritage, he led West Virginia University Potomac State College and West Virginia University at Parkersburg. He believes a university president has two main roles: to be the “storyteller in chief” and to be a cheerleader for the institution. He’s already talking to locals at grocery stores and post offices about Heritage University, keen to build connections.

Dr. Gilmer’s vision supports the growing trend in higher education to strengthen ties with local communities. Research shows that universities can have a lasting impact by engaging with their surrounding areas. According to a recent report from the American Council on Education, institutions that foster community partnerships not only bolster their prominence but also help improve local economies.
