The Rice women’s basketball team is gearing up for the 2025 Discover Puerto Rico Shootout during Thanksgiving week in San Juan. They’ll play three games from November 26 to 28 against UCF, Illinois State, and Morgan State at Coliseo Guillermo Angulo.

Head Coach Lindsay Edmonds expressed her excitement, highlighting the chance to challenge the team early in the season. She believes this tournament showcases the exceptional experience Rice provides its student-athletes.

This year continues a trend; the Owls participated in an MTE last season as well, facing BYU and Vermont in the Cancun Challenge.

Looking at their opponents, Illinois State had a solid 2024-25 season, finishing with 24 wins and reaching the Fab Four of the WNIT. Morgan State wrapped up their last season with a 13-17 record, while UCF, in its third Big XII season, had a tough year at 12-18.

Rice finished with a balanced 17-17 record last season and made it to the AAC Championship game twice. They return some promising talent, including Dominique Ennis, a key player recognized on the All-AAC Second Team, as well as newcomers Victoria Flores and Aniah Alexis.

As the games approach, fans will eagerly wait for the specific dates, times, and ticket details.

Beyond the excitement on the court, tournaments like this one foster strong connections between teams and communities. The Owls not only get to compete but also embrace a cultural experience in Puerto Rico, creating lasting memories both on and off the court. Engaging with diverse teams can inspire growth and resilience in young athletes, a key element in sports.
