Plans for a futuristic city in Senegal, called Akon City, have officially been put on hold. Akon, the American-Senegalese singer behind the project, will now focus on a more realistic development.
Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of Senegal’s tourism development body, stated, “The Akon City project no longer exists.” This shift came after years of ambitious but unfulfilled promises. Originally revealed in 2018, the project aimed to create a $6 billion city powered by a new cryptocurrency, Akoin. Early designs for this city drew comparisons to the fictional Wakanda from Marvel’s “Black Panther.”
Despite the excitement surrounding Akon City, the site in Mbodiène—about 100 kilometers south of Dakar—has seen little progress. The area remains mostly vacant, with only an incomplete reception building as evidence of development. Local residents expressed frustration. One noted, “We were promised jobs and development. Instead, nothing has changed.”
Akon’s cryptocurrency, Akoin, has faced similar challenges. The star admitted in a recent interview, “It wasn’t being managed properly—I take full responsibility.” Moreover, questions arose about its legality, given that Senegal uses the CFA franc and has regulatory concerns about cryptocurrency use.
Historically, major infrastructure projects in Africa often face hurdles like financing issues and governmental red tape. The previously grand plans for Akon City included essential services like a hospital and solar energy systems, but they never materialized.
In a recent turn of events, the Senegalese government announced they would collaborate with Akon on a more achievable project for the same location. This new initiative hopes to align better with Senegal’s developmental goals, especially with the 2026 Youth Olympic Games on the horizon, which should boost tourism in the area.
Experts in urban development emphasize the importance of creating realistic and sustainable plans. Andrew McDonald, a city planning expert, suggests that “local engagement is crucial for success.” This involves not just flashy designs but also addressing the community’s needs and available resources.
Ultimately, while the dream of Akon City may be fading, the opportunity for meaningful development remains. By focusing on practicality and local support, there is still a chance to improve the lives of those in Mbodiène.
