Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Advocates for Deported Boxer Chávez Jr. to Serve His Sentence at Home

MEXICO CITY (AP) — President Claudia Sheinbaum shared on Friday that the boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. hadn’t been arrested earlier in Mexico due to mostly being in the U.S. since an arrest order was issued in 2023.

Her comments came a day after U.S. authorities announced that Chávez was arrested in California. He was taken into custody for overstaying his visa and allegedly lying on a green card application, and was being processed for expedited removal.

Sheinbaum expressed hope that Chávez would be deported back to Mexico to face serious charges related to arms and drug trafficking.

On Wednesday, Chávez was detained while riding a scooter outside his home in the upscale Studio City area of Los Angeles. Homeland Security reported he overstayed a tourist visa that began in August 2023 and expired in February 2024.

Complicating matters, Chávez allegedly provided false information when applying for permanent residency in April 2024. This application was based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen, Frida Muñoz, who has connections to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the notorious Sinaloa cartel leader.

Recent studies indicate that individuals with connections to drug cartels often face heightened scrutiny when applying for immigration benefits. The Sinaloa Cartel has long been linked to violence in Mexico, suggesting that Chávez’s case is not just a personal issue but part of a broader trend affecting security and immigration policies.

This situation gained public attention after Chávez recently lost a match to influencer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California. Social media reactions have been mixed, with many expressing shock at the arrest of a well-known athlete.
