Erin Heisler Wagner, the Director of Strategic Communications at Planned Parenthood, points out that a significant portion of Iowans—22%—depend on Medicaid for essential services like birth control and cancer screenings. When federal funding is cut, it leaves many in a tight spot.

Wagner expressed her worries, saying, “This bill will impact many individuals. Not everyone can find alternatives.” Many might face difficult choices between their health needs and paying bills. The changes could lead to a domino effect, forcing families to prioritize their finances over healthcare.

Medicaid already has strict conditions for covering abortion services, allowing payments only in cases of rape, incest, or if a mother’s life is at risk. The new bill will further reduce funding for routine services, affecting annual exams and screenings provided by clinics like Planned Parenthood.

In the wake of recent legislative changes, Planned Parenthood has closed four clinics in Iowa. Following the state’s near-total abortion ban, abortion rates plummeted by 60%, but the number of Iowans traveling to other states for these services increased by 239%. This shows a growing trend where local resources are not sufficient to meet the demand.

Wagner recalled similar situations from the past, stating, “We’ve seen this before; there wasn’t enough access to care.” She noted that gaps in service led to rising STI rates and unintended pregnancies. Alarmingly, the use of Iowa’s family planning program dropped by 83%.

For those who still need care, Wagner reassured them that options exist. Despite the closure of their Cedar Rapids clinic, Planned Parenthood continues to offer telehealth services. The only remaining clinic in Eastern Iowa is located in Iowa City and is open to new patients.
