Transforming India’s Cooperative Sector: Amit Shah Announces First National Cooperative University to Combat Nepotism and Fill Training Gaps

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah recently laid the foundation for the Tribhuvan Sahkari University (TSU) in Gujarat. This university aims to transform the cooperative sector in India by ensuring that only trained professionals enter the field.

With a budget of ₹500 crore, TSU will span 125 acres at Anand Agriculture University. It’s named after Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel, a key figure in India’s cooperative movement and the founder of Amul. Patel’s vision has greatly influenced the sector, and Shah emphasized this during his speech, noting Patel’s significant contributions.

The university’s mission is to tackle issues like nepotism. Traditionally, many were hired without proper training, but TSU will focus on hiring only those who have been educated and trained specifically for these roles. This shift aims to create a well-equipped workforce for the cooperative sector, which employs about 30 crore people in India.

Shah also addressed concerns regarding the university’s naming. Some critics felt it should be named after Dr. Verghese Kurien, known as the father of the White Revolution. Shah clarified that Patel’s contributions were pivotal in shaping the cooperative landscape today.

The cooperative sector is poised for growth. According to a recent report, over 60% of people in this field believe that education and training can significantly improve efficiency and transparency.
