UPF Teams Up with Arizona State University to Launch the Innovative American International Institute in Morocco

The Private University of Fez (UPF) is teaming up with Arizona State University (ASU) to launch the American International Institute. This new initiative is set to open its doors on July 9, 2025, aiming to provide Moroccan students with access to dual-degree programs. Students will earn diplomas recognized in Morocco alongside American degrees in various fields like management, engineering, digital technologies, and health sciences.

This partnership, part of the ASU–Cintana Alliance, connects UPF with a global network of universities. It aims to deliver high-quality education while respecting local contexts. UPF’s President, Mohammed Aziz Lahlou, described this move as transformative for both the university and Morocco, saying it will open doors to opportunities that were once hard to reach.

### Meeting Educational Demands

The need for international degrees in Morocco is growing. Currently, about 70,000 Moroccan students study abroad each year due to limited local options that meet global standards, especially in English. A recent UPF survey found that 75% of respondents were excited about the new program, with one-third preferring courses taught solely in English.

Douglas L. Becker, Founder and Chairman of Cintana Education, called this partnership a forward-thinking step for higher education in North Africa. Becker noted that UPF is not just broadening its academic programs; it’s aligning with a leading global university to provide high-quality education.

Looking ahead, UPF envisions expanding the American International Institute into a multi-campus network across Morocco, with a goal of enrolling 4,000 students by 2034. Programs will focus on enhancing employability and fostering digital, student-centered learning.

Founded in 2006, UPF is Morocco’s first state-recognized private university, with campuses in Fez and Rabat. It currently offers over 45 programs in diverse fields such as dental medicine, architecture, political science, and business.
