Recently, the Trump administration and Israel’s government teamed up with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to provide aid in Gaza. Founded in February 2025, this partnership aims to help people facing severe food shortages. Hani Almadhoun, director of philanthropy at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), called this approach “using food as a weapon.”

Almadhoun expressed deep concern, stating that GHF is linked to the deaths of over 600 Palestinians. This isn’t just a statistic for him; it hits home. “We have family and friends impacted by this violence,” he told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes. He criticized the involvement of American mercenaries in the conflict, emphasizing that such tactics only amplify suffering.

The UNRWA, which has been in operation since 1949, originally supported both Israeli and Palestinian refugees. Now, it employs over 30,000 staff, providing education, job training, and essential relief to those in need. Almadhoun pointed out that GHF spends a significant portion of its budget on armored vehicles, a luxury that long-standing aid organizations like UNRWA cannot afford.

“Guess who doesn’t have armored vehicles? UNRWA and many other NGOs in the area,” Almadhoun said. These agencies attempt to help without resorting to armed protection. The current situation highlights a key difference: GHF operates with military might, which alters the landscape of humanitarian aid.

Almadhoun also noted that there are over 1,000 UNRWA trucks waiting to deliver food to Gaza. Unfortunately, those trucks haven’t been allowed entry, leaving many desperate for food aid. “The idea is to use aid as a leverage point,” he remarked, highlighting a troubling strategy where food distribution is turned into a bargaining tool.

Recent events further underscore this crisis. Reports from U.S. contractors indicate that, at GHF distribution sites, armed guards used live ammunition and stun grenades to control crowds scrambling for food. This has led to tragic scenes, as people have died attempting to access basic necessities.

Jonathan Whittall, head of the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OCHA OPT), stated, “The attempt to survive is met with a death sentence.” His remarks highlight the escalating violence as people try to reach food supplies.

In June, the U.S. committed $30 million to GHF, a controversial decision given the rising humanitarian needs and the violent context of food distribution. As Almadhoun said, “The issue is that they’re using food as a weapon.”

Despite the severe challenges, agencies like UNRWA continue to strive for peace and support. Their approach focuses on stabilizing lives rather than militarizing assistance. The people of Gaza deserve more than a cycle of violence and scarcity; they need sustainable support and peace.
