Engaging Youth in Climate Action: A Call for Involvement

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is urging young people to take an active role in tackling climate change. This message was highlighted by Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, the Chief of Field Office for UNICEF in Bauchi, during a recent tree-planting event in commemoration of World Environment Day.

At the event held in Dass, Bauchi State, Dr. Rafique thanked local leaders and organizations for their support. She emphasized the importance of protecting our land, stating, “Our land is our future.” She believes that involving youth is crucial because they will be the future leaders of our planet.

Climate change poses serious risks, especially to children. Dr. Rafique pointed out that a healthy environment is essential for young people to thrive. “The involvement of youth and communities is key to safeguarding our environment,” she said.

UNICEF is working with young people on initiatives related to water, sanitation, and climate education. These programs encourage youths to participate actively in environmental protection. “If we engage our youth, they can help ensure that our ecosystem remains intact,” she noted.

Moreover, Dr. Rafique highlighted the need for ongoing community efforts. “We aim for a culture where planting trees becomes a regular practice,” she added. It is not enough to have a single tree-planting event; lasting change requires consistent action.

Supporting these initiatives, Alhaji Habib Mohammed Sadique from the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) stressed the need for water to sustain the trees. He confirmed that his agency is committed to providing water to rural areas to support these environmental projects.

A recent survey showed that 76% of youth around the world report a strong desire to take part in climate action. This reflects a growing trend where younger generations are becoming increasingly aware of environmental issues. Social media platforms are buzzing with discussions about environmental sustainability, showcasing how youths are advocating for change.

The involvement of youth is not just vital for planting trees but also for fostering a broader awareness of ecological issues. A 2021 UNICEF report highlighted that educating young people about climate change can drive significant progress in environmental conservation.
