Box Office Buzz: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Roars with $26 Million on Friday While ‘F1’ Speeds to $100 Million!

Summer movie season is heating up with dinosaurs and racecars dominating the box office. Universal’s latest release, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” has made a big splash, earning $26 million domestically over the Fourth of July weekend. Since its debut on July 2, it has raked in a total of $55.8 million before the holiday even began. Projections suggest that by Sunday, it could surpass $140 million, putting it among the top domestic earners of the year. However, with a production budget of around $180 million—excluding marketing—Universal needs strong weekend numbers to keep the momentum going.

Interestingly, “Rebirth” had the lowest opening of all the “Jurassic World” films. For comparison, the original movie in 2015 opened with a whopping $208 million. The sequels, “Fallen Kingdom” and “Dominion,” also had impressive openings of $148 million and $145 million, respectively.

Directed by Gareth Edwards and featuring a screenplay by David Koepp, who wrote the original “Jurassic Park,” this installment stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey. They venture through a perilous jungle in search of dinosaur DNA that might cure heart diseases. Audience feedback has been mixed; while CinemaScore rated it a solid “B,” critics were less impressed, giving it a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In second place, Brad Pitt’s racing drama “F1” earned $7 million on Friday, marking a 72% drop from its opening weekend. This film, backed by Apple Studios, offers a fresh winning experience after previous disappointments. Starring Damson Idris as a young driver with a struggling team, it’s set to earn around $24 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $107 million.

Third place goes to Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon,” which earned $2.8 million on Friday. It should reach about $9.7 million for the weekend, pushing its total domestic gross to $222 million. Director Dean DeBlois returns for this live-action remake and an upcoming sequel scheduled for Summer 2027.

Disney’s “Elio,” now holds the record for the lowest opening ever for a Pixar film, grossing only $1.5 million on Friday and projected to finish the weekend at around $54 million. This family film centers on a lonely boy with a fascination for aliens.

Finally, rounding out the top five is “28 Years Later,” the first in a rebooted zombie series from Danny Boyle. It made $1.15 million on Friday, with its domestic total expected to hit $60 million soon. A follow-up, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” is already in the works and set for release in January, contingent on the box office performance.

This summer’s movie lineup reflects changing audience tastes and marketing strategies. As franchises adapt, it’s clear that nostalgia remains a strong draw, even as new stories try to take the spotlight.
