FDA Clamps Down on Food Units in Goa: Hygiene and License Violations Exposed!

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) recently conducted inspections in Tiswadi and Bardez, resulting in the closure of six food outlets. Among those shut down was a biryani spot in Agacaim, found operating without an FSSAI license and under unsanitary conditions.

In Sangolda, two cloud kitchens faced the same fate due to serious hygiene issues and structural problems. A kitchen in Mapusa and two outlets in Assagao were also closed for failing to meet cleanliness standards, with one outlet slapped with a ₹5,000 fine. Additionally, nine chicken vendors in Varca, Orlim, and Carmona were found lacking FSSAI licenses and ordered to halt operations.

Sweta Dessai, the director of the FDA, noted that some establishments operated in temporary structures without basic hygiene facilities, like tap water or proper drainage. One food outlet in Varca was found selling expired items. Items worth ₹9,000 were destroyed, and samples were taken for further testing. This included chocolate containers, fruits, and packs of sweets that were no longer safe to eat.

Moreover, the FDA received complaints about a hotel in Margao illegally cooking on a sidewalk. Inspections revealed violations such as inadequate pest control and poor kitchen hygiene. The establishment agreed to move frying indoors within seven days.

Maintaining food safety is crucial. According to a recent report by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), nearly 30% of food samples collected nationwide were found unsafe for consumption. These stats highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring food hygiene.
