Chicago Race Highlights: SVG’s Triumph, Dramatic Finish, Heated Moments, and NASCAR’s Possible Comeback

Shane van Gisbergen is making waves in NASCAR once again. This time, it’s in Chicago, a city that has launched his career into the spotlight. After winning the inaugural Chicago street race in 2023, he pulled off another victory in the NASCAR Cup Series Grant Park 165. He led comfortably until a late caution put some tension in the air.

Van Gisbergen, known as “SVG,” became only the second driver in history to win both the Xfinity and Cup races from the pole position in the same weekend, following in Kyle Busch’s footsteps from 2016. With this victory, he also stands out as the most successful foreign-born driver in NASCAR Cup Series history with three wins.

Reflecting on his surprising journey, van Gisbergen recalled how he didn’t plan to make racing in NASCAR a full-time gig. “This place changed my life,” he said. His modest beginnings have transformed since his first race with Trackhouse Racing just two years ago.

The race was mostly dry, which was a relief, as rain threatened just after the checkered flag. But the event had its share of drama. A controversial caution occurred when Cody Ware crashed into a tire barrier, just as van Gisbergen was on his final lap. NASCAR held off on displaying the caution until he had crossed the start-finish line, which left others wondering what might have happened if they had restarted the race.

Ty Gibbs, who finished second, and Tyler Reddick, in third, admitted they would have loved a chance at a last-minute restart. “That would have been awesome,” Gibbs said. The tension among racers was palpable, with several incidents leading to frustrated exchanges post-race.

The emotions ran high on this street course, where a small mistake can lead to significant consequences. Joey Logano was among the angriest drivers. He had a heated exchange with Ross Chastain, blaming him for poor decisions that seemed to impact many drivers. Similarly, Bubba Wallace and Alex Bowman had their own disagreements on track, showcasing the high-stakes environment of road racing.

As for the future of racing in Chicago, the current deal is winding down. NASCAR is considering relocating the street event to San Diego. Officials are still in talks, and opinions among drivers vary. Some appreciate the urban setting but also see potential benefits in moving the race around. Justin Marks, from Trackhouse Racing, emphasized the importance of making racing accessible, stating, “If you can put a race in the heart of a city, it’s great for the sport.”

Ultimately, the Chicago race may be one for the books—not just for van Gisbergen, who is carving his name into NASCAR history, but also for the thrilling narratives and intense rivalries that continue to shape this sport.
