Netflix has taken a big step in the world of anime. At the recent Anime Expo in Los Angeles, they revealed new shows and interesting stats about how popular anime has become.
Did you know that over 150 million households, or more than 300 million viewers, now watch anime on Netflix? That’s over half of all their members! This represents a major shift from a niche audience to a significant global presence. In fact, anime viewership has tripled on the platform in just five years. In 2024, 33 anime titles made it into Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) list. That’s double the amount from just two years ago.
Netflix also shared that their anime content reached over 1 billion views worldwide this year. A surprising statistic is that 80 to 90 percent of viewers prefer watching anime dubbed in their native languages. To meet this demand, Netflix now offers dubbed audio and descriptions in up to 33 languages.
Among the exciting new titles is Sakamoto Days, a series about a hitman who becomes a family man. It was a hit during its first season, ranking in the top charts across 54 countries. New episodes will start streaming on July 14.
Another anticipated release is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a sequel to the popular 2022 series based on the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. Viewers were treated to a teaser and new artwork at Anime Expo, building anticipation.
For fans of cute and colorful characters, My Melody & Kuromi, featuring beloved Sanrio characters, is set to debut on July 24. It promises an original adventure filled with charm.
Other titles on the horizon include Record of Ragnarok III, Beastars Final Season, and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. Netflix is keen on showcasing how diverse the anime genre has become, offering everything from intense action (Jujutsu Kaisen) to whimsical romantic tales (My Happy Marriage).
In a recent survey, 62% of anime fans noted they felt a stronger connection to Japanese culture through anime, highlighting its impact beyond entertainment. This trend reflects a growing global fascination with anime as it breaks down cultural barriers.
