Michael Douglas Reveals Why He’s Stepping Back from Acting: ‘I Had to Stop’

Michael Douglas, a two-time Oscar winner, recently hinted that he might be stepping away from acting for good. Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, he mentioned he has “no real intentions” to return unless something truly special comes along.

At 80, Douglas reflected on his long career, which spans nearly 60 years. He hasn’t taken on any work since 2022, choosing instead to focus on life beyond acting. “I realised I had to stop,” he said. “I didn’t want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.”

His last role was portraying Benjamin Franklin in Franklin, an Apple TV+ series that wrapped filming in 2022 and premiered in 2024. Now, he enjoys his time off, watching his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, continue her acting journey. “My golf game is getting better,” he joked, showing that he’s content outside the spotlight.

Douglas has also faced significant health challenges, including stage four throat cancer, which he battled in 2010. He considers himself fortunate to have avoided surgery that could have limited his ability to speak and act.

Beyond his career, Douglas shared his thoughts on the current state of U.S. politics, expressing concern about its direction. He believes the country is “flirting with autocracy” and points out the importance of democracy. “It’s precious and vulnerable, and it always has to be protected,” he said.

Statistics show that many Americans share his worries. A recent survey revealed that over 70% feel democracy in the U.S. is under threat. Douglas hopes this period serves as a reminder of the struggles for freedom faced by people everywhere, including the Czechs who fought hard for their independence.

In closing, while Douglas may not actively seek new roles, he remains open to exceptional opportunities that might arise. For now, he’s enjoying his well-earned break and keeping a watchful eye on both his health and the world around him.
