Essentia Health Responds to MNA Strike: Operational Changes Impacting Clinicians and Patient Care

Essentia Health Services Affected by Potential Nurses’ Strike

Essentia Health is preparing to pause services at some facilities starting July 10 due to a strike by advanced practice providers represented by the Minnesota Nurses Association. This action may lead to temporary service suspensions at clinics in Deerwood, Emily, and Hackensack.

The goal is to focus staff resources where they’re most needed. Essentia Health assures that pharmacy services at the Deerwood clinic will continue as usual.

In a recent statement, Essentia emphasized, “We’re doing our best to maintain care during this challenging time.” They are actively reviewing patient appointments and prioritizing those with urgent medical needs.

The bargaining group for advanced practice providers covers a substantial part of north central and northeastern Minnesota. Notably, these providers handle about 44% of all patient visits across Essentia’s East Market, underscoring their critical role in the healthcare system.

Emergency care clinics are particularly vital, with 88% of urgent care visits involving advanced practice providers. The healthcare provider is working hard to lessen the impact of the strike on patients and has begun reaching out to those affected about their appointments.

For further details on how this might affect scheduled surgeries or other appointments, Essentia has created a dedicated webpage with updated information, accessible here.

Essentia Health operates 14 hospitals, over 80 clinics, and numerous pharmacies and care facilities across Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. They employ approximately 15,500 people, including around 2,350 physicians and advanced practitioners.

This situation highlights the essential role of healthcare workers and the challenges faced by the healthcare system amid labor disputes. With ongoing conversations about staffing and patient care, striking a balance between provider needs and patient services remains critical in today’s healthcare landscape.
