Where is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.? Boxer Fails to Appear in Court for Unrelated Case Following ICE Arrest

Boxer Julio Cesar Chávez Jr.’s whereabouts are currently unknown after his recent arrest by ICE. This came just days after he faced influencer Jake Paul in a fight in Anaheim, California.

Chávez Jr. was supposed to be in court on Monday to discuss early release related to gun charges from 2024. However, he didn’t show up, leaving his attorney, Michael Goldstein, puzzled about his location, as he told USA Today. “We have no information, unfortunately,” Goldstein stated.

Two days before the court date, Goldstein found that Chávez Jr. had been in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security in Hidalgo, Texas.

Chávez Jr. was taken into custody for overstaying his visa and providing false information on a green card application. Additionally, he has an active warrant in Mexico connected to alleged drug and arms trafficking, supposedly linked to the Sinaloa Cartel.

In response, his father, the legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chávez, defended him, claiming, “He is not a criminal.” He expressed disbelief over the accusations and insisted on his son’s innocence. “We’re calm because we know my son’s innocence,” he told a Colombian newspaper.

The investigation into Chávez Jr. has been ongoing since 2019. Mexico’s Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero and President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated hopes for his extradition to Mexico.

Chávez Sr. raised concerns about why his son was allowed to fight before the arrest, questioning the timing of his detainment, especially since the DHS had decided to act the day before his bout with Paul. “My son has been paying taxes in the United States for three years,” he pointed out. “Just because he knows people doesn’t mean he is involved in trafficking.”
