Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, emphasized the Indian government’s commitment to strengthening agriculture at the recent Agriculture Leadership Conclave in New Delhi.
He shared that over 25 crore Soil Health Cards have been given to farmers. These cards help them use fertilizers wisely, which boosts crop yields. The Kisan Credit Card initiative has made it easier for farmers to access loans, reducing their financial stress.
Goyal pointed out that many farming families have benefited from the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi scheme. This program provides direct income support, helping farmers during tough times.
On the digital front, he mentioned that 1,400 agricultural mandis have joined the e-NAM platform. This system allows farmers to check real-time prices and connect better with markets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government ensured that fertilizer supplies remained steady by offering substantial subsidies.
Despite global economic challenges, India’s agricultural sector has shown great resilience. Combined exports from agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries reached ₹4 lakh crore. Goyal praised farmers for their contributions to India’s vision of “Local Goes Global,” highlighting successes in basmati rice, spices, and fresh produce.
Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with countries like Australia and the UAE are opening new markets and supporting growth. Looking ahead, Goyal said there will be a focus on improving seed production, organic farming, and modern irrigation techniques like drip irrigation.
Digital agriculture is also on the rise, supported by tools like AI and geospatial technology. These advancements can help strengthen Farmer Producer Organisations and cooperatives. Goyal stressed the importance of adding value through better food processing, design, and packaging.
Overall, he concluded that the government remains dedicated to ensuring a secure and prosperous future for Indian farmers, reinforcing agriculture as a vital part of India’s development goals.
