In a talk with TMZ, Cain referenced a joke from Fox News host Jesse Watters, who quipped that Superman’s cape should feature the name of the Salvadoran gang MS-13. Cain wondered how far Hollywood will go in changing iconic characters. He questioned, “How woke is Hollywood going to make this character?” He criticized the decision to adjust Superman’s values for modern audiences, arguing that they detract from his established identity.
“We know Superman is an immigrant — he’s a freaking alien,” Cain added, implying that his alien origins don’t require a political agenda. He believes Superman’s traditional values of kindness and justice, particularly in the context of immigration, should remain intact.
Interestingly, critical responses to the film have generally been positive, emphasizing its crowd-pleasing nature rather than political overtones. USA Today highlighted that while Gunn incorporates kindness into the narrative, he avoids heavy-handed political messages.
Gunn himself stated, “Superman is the story of America. An immigrant… but mostly a story about basic human kindness.” He acknowledged that his version might upset some people, but he aims to inspire kindness amidst a landscape of meanness, especially given the current state of online interactions.
The film opens in theaters with expectations of a robust box office, aiming for over $100 million. It stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
