Howard University is making waves in the sports world by adding Montel Jones to its women’s basketball coaching staff. Jones officially became an assistant coach in June 2025, bringing a wealth of experience and passion for HBCU athletics.

Before joining Howard, Jones had a successful stint at Tuskegee University, helping the team achieve a 20-10 record and reach the conference championship game in the 2024-25 season. His first year laid vital groundwork, with the team finishing 15-10 overall. Jones expressed his excitement about being part of Howard, noting the warm welcome from Coach Grace and the dedication of the talented student-athletes.

Jones’s journey in coaching started at Saint Augustine’s University, where he led the women’s basketball team from 2018 to 2020. Under his guidance, the team not only excelled on the court but also earned academic accolades, such as the CIAA Highest GPA Award for women’s basketball in 2018-19. His coaching strategy emphasized defense, leading to an impressive average of over 21 turnovers forced per game.

Hailing from Kinston, North Carolina—a town known for producing basketball talent—Jones played at the University of Mount Olive, contributing to its historic Elite Eight appearance in 2005. He holds a master’s degree from Wingate University and a Doctorate in Sport Management, further solidifying his credentials in the field.

His role at Howard signals the university’s commitment to enhancing its women’s basketball program with experienced coaching talent that understands the unique challenges and opportunities within the HBCU landscape. As Howard aims for MEAC titles and postseason glory, Jones’s leadership is poised to make a significant impact.

Interestingly, the demand for skilled coaches in women’s sports is on the rise. A recent NCAA report highlighted a growing interest in female mentorship roles.
