Thanks to a grant from Duly Health and Care, Midwestern University is stepping up to provide essential eye care to those in need. Many people overlook routine vision check-ups, especially those without insurance or financial support. Yet, untreated vision problems can severely impact daily life, making simple tasks like reading or driving challenging.
Since 2019, Duly Health and Care has given Midwestern University’s Eye Institute in Downers Grove, Illinois, a yearly grant of $5,000. This funding is aimed at helping uninsured patients or those in financial distress access crucial vision care.
Dustin Wilson, the Charitable Fund Manager at Duly, emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “Clear vision is vital not just for health but also for success in life.” With this grant, Midwestern University can assist an additional 40 to 50 patients yearly, covering essential tests and care that might not be available through other programs.
Dr. Jenelle Mallios, an associate dean at the Chicago College of Optometry, appreciates the flexibility the grant offers. It allows them to go beyond basic exams and provide comprehensive care, which is especially crucial for patients with chronic conditions like diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy, if left unchecked, is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. “Many people delay seeking care due to costs, which can lead to severe consequences,” notes Allison Foster, the Clinic Manager of the Eye Institute.
Vision exams can uncover other health issues, too. “The retina provides a unique view into a person’s overall health,” Dr. Mallios explains. “We can identify problems such as diabetes or heart disease without invasive procedures.” This broadens the scope of care beyond just eyesight.
The grant benefits Midwestern University’s optometry students as well. A diverse patient base allows them to gain valuable experience in diagnosing and treating various conditions. “Investing in training healthcare professionals ensures a healthier future,” Wilson adds. “They are key to building a compassionate healthcare system.”
Since the grant started, over 200 patients have received eye care. Personal stories illustrate its impact. One patient expressed gratitude, saying, “I didn’t realize how much I needed glasses until I had my diabetic eye exam. Now I can see!” Another shared, “I thought I was going blind. The Eye Institute helped me find out my prescription was outdated, which was causing my migraines.”
Both Duly Health and Care and Midwestern University are excited about the future of their partnership. “This grant has brought about meaningful changes,” Wilson concludes. It’s clear that efforts like this are making a significant difference in the community.
