Exciting News: Food Trucks and Trailers Now Approved in Maui’s Agricultural District!

A new Maui ordinance is bringing exciting changes for local farmers. This law allows them to use mobile food trucks and trailers in agricultural zones, opening the door to new ways to sell their products.

The Maui County Council passed the ordinance, which was signed into law by Mayor Richard Bissen. Previously, many farmers were forced to shut down their food trucks due to strict agricultural codes. The new law can help them get back in business.

Gale Ashby, a local farmer, saw significant income loss when he had to close his food trailer two years ago. He used to sell smoothies made from fresh fruits he grew, such as dragon fruit and citrus. Ashby expressed relief about the new rule, stating he’s eager to restart his operations.

Gabe Johnson, a council member, highlighted that the new ordinance simplifies the process for farmers. They no longer need a special permit to operate a mobile food truck, which can be costly and difficult to obtain. Instead, it’s now seen as an “accessory use.”

This change provides more opportunities for local farmers and small businesses to connect with the public. Sydney Smith, chair of the farm advisory group, is excited about farmers registering for mobile food truck operations.

However, there are some limitations. In Hana, the number of mobile food trucks and trailers is capped at 25. Outside of Hana, there are no limits on operations within farm-producer lots.

Food prepared in these trucks must adhere to health regulations set by the state. According to recent statistics, 78% of consumers are more likely to buy local products when they see them offered by farmers, emphasizing the importance of this ordinance for both farmers and the community.
