MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota head coach Jenny Hansen has officially welcomed Sam Scherwinski as an assistant coach. Sam, who has a rich history in gymnastics, joins the Gopher family after a season with the University of Nebraska.

Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Sam has strong ties to Minnesota, having lived there during his childhood. “I’m thrilled to come back home to Minnesota and join the Gopher gymnastics family!” Sam expressed. He appreciates the program’s tradition of excellence and is eager to contribute to its ongoing success.

At Nebraska, Sam made a significant impact, guiding the team to its third consecutive NCAA Championships round. He focused on vault and floor events, where 19 athletes achieved personal records, showcasing his effective coaching methods.

Coach Hansen shared her excitement about Sam’s addition, praising his passion for gymnastics and commitment to athlete development. She believes his energy will foster a positive environment that encourages growth and excellence.

Before Nebraska, Sam was at Lindenwood University, where he coached uneven bars. Under his guidance, the team thrived, earning multiple records and individual titles. His achievements earned him recognition as both the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year and the MIC Assistant Coach of the Year.

Scherwinski’s coaching career also includes valuable experience at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he helped lead athletes to top finishes at the WIAC Conference and DIII National Championships.

Sam isn’t just a coach; he has a competitive background as a Level 10 gymnast. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a master’s degree in Sport Coaching from West Virginia University.

Reflecting on his new role, he said, “The passion within the program and the support from the Gopher community make this an incredible place to be. I can’t wait to get started.”
