Jazz Youngsters Shine in Vegas Opener Despite Bailey’s Bench and Clayton’s Injury

LAS VEGAS — Ace Bailey sat out the Utah Jazz’s first game at the Las Vegas Summer League due to soreness in his right hip flexor. Unfortunately, by the end of the night, another player was ruled out for the same reason.

Despite the Jazz’s 111-106 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, there were some bright spots. Kyle Filipowski stood out, while Cody Williams made waves in the fourth quarter. Walton Clayton Jr. also impressed with his developing offensive skills. Fans were disappointed to miss a showdown between top-five picks, but they still left with hope for the future.

The main concern of the evening was injuries. With just over two minutes left, Clayton limped off the court, clutching his right leg. He was quickly ruled out with a hamstring injury but didn’t seem too worried. “It’s good—just a little tight,” he shared after the game. When asked about playing again in Vegas, his answer was simple: “Yeah.” While the training staff will have the final say, this was positive news for a rookie who’s been showing steady growth.

Clayton finished with 21 points, six rebounds, and three assists, showcasing impressive plays. He executed a smooth floater that impressed the audience and created his own shot with confidence.

Coach Chris Jones noted Clayton’s skills, especially in dealing with defensive pressure. “Whenever a team puts that kind of pressure on you, it shows you’re doing something right,” he said, highlighting Clayton’s proficiency in using ball screens to get open shots.

Clayton’s versatility is valuable in the Jazz’s young backcourt. “I think that’s why they drafted me—to adapt to different roles,” he explained. Playing alongside a skilled big man like Filipowski enhances his game. Filipowski dominated, scoring 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting, including three three-pointers.

So, what fueled Filipowski’s strong performance? “My team needed me to step up,” he said. His ability to read the game impressed Clayton, who noted their growing chemistry. “He does a great job adjusting to what the defense is doing,” Clayton said. Their teamwork created some entertaining moments, even if not all the plays led to points.

Williams also contributed with a stellar fourth-quarter performance, making it a productive night despite the loss. Yet, the shadow of injuries loomed large. While Clayton is optimistic about his hamstring, concerns linger for Bailey. Coach Jones expressed uncertainty about Bailey’s condition but promised to follow up with the training staff.

As summer league progresses, fans are eager to see how the team’s young talent develops in these early stages, especially amidst the challenges of injuries. Historical trends show such tournaments often serve as a launching pad for players, shaping their careers in the NBA.
