Even in summer, when many of us are unwinding, invasive species are hard at work. These pests threaten Michigan’s landscape, economy, and our health. So, what can you do to help? Learning about these invaders is a great start.
The NotMiSpecies webinar series offers resources to understand and tackle these issues. Organized by agencies, universities, and local groups, it focuses on protecting Michigan’s natural resources under the Michigan Invasive Species Program. There are over three dozen past webinars covering topics like eco-friendly boating practices and safeguarding your garden.
Highlighted in the upcoming events are two webinars targeting urgent threats to Michigan’s environment:
Spotting the Spotted Lanternfly: What to Know and What You Can Do
On Tuesday, July 29, from 9 to 10 a.m., join Deborah McCullough, a forest entomology professor at Michigan State University. She’ll discuss the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect first spotted in Pennsylvania in 2014. This pest has spread to 18 states and is now found in localized infestations across four counties in southeastern Michigan. McCullough will explain how to identify the insect and its host tree, the tree of heaven, as well as how it affects local trees and communities. More importantly, she’ll share management strategies if the pest appears in your area.
They’ll Need That Hug: How Climate Change is Increasing Native and Invasive Threats to Michigan’s Trees
On Wednesday, August 27, from 9 to 10 a.m., hear from experts Erin Biggs and Simeon Wright from the DNR. They will detail how invasive insects and diseases, alongside climate change, stress Michigan’s forest ecosystems. From hemlock woolly adelgid to beech bark disease, these threats are impacting our forests more than ever. Biggs and Wright will discuss the specific challenges and potential solutions for preserving Michigan’s green spaces.
