In a disappointing turn of events, Bhopal will no longer host the Asian Rowing Championship, originally scheduled for October 14-19. The Indian Rowing Federation announced their withdrawal, citing safety concerns due to recent tensions following a terror attack and ongoing security operations near the Indian-Pakistan border.
This decision has left many athletes and officials frustrated. They felt blindsided, as the Federation did not consult the Madhya Pradesh Sports department before pulling out. Now, Haiphong, Vietnam, will take over the event from October 16-19.
Rakesh Gupta, the Director of the Sports Department, expressed his disappointment. “We learned very late about this change. Communication should have been key before making such a significant decision,” he remarked. The controversy raises questions about how well organizations communicate, especially during sensitive times.
For many Indian rowers, this loss represents a substantial setback. Initially, Bhopal would have hosted 44 athletes—22 men and 22 women. With the event now held abroad, only a fraction of those athletes may be able to attend due to financial and logistical challenges, which may limit representation to just 11.
Looking back, this event would have been a pivotal moment for Bhopal, positioning it as a potential hub for international rowing. The city’s lake has already been praised for its suitability during previous national competitions. Balaji Mardapa, the Indian Rowing Federation President, acknowledged this potential and stated, “We will aim to bring the event to Bhopal next year.”

Experts suggest that such instances highlight the importance of dialogue between sports federations and local authorities. A 2022 survey from the Sports Management Association indicated that 67% of organizations faced similar communication hurdles, impacting event planning and execution.
