Families of Air India crash victims are searching for answers after a recent report revealed that the plane’s fuel switches were turned off just after takeoff, creating more questions than clarity about the tragedy. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, bound for London, crashed into a medical college shortly after leaving Ahmedabad on June 12, resulting in the deaths of 241 passengers and crew members, along with 19 people on the ground.
A preliminary investigation by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau found that the cockpit voice recording captured a conversation between the pilots. One pilot asked why the fuel switches were turned off, and the other denied any action. This confusion has left families, like Ishan Baxi’s, frustrated. Baxi lost two cousins in the crash. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, hoping it will reveal the truth and prevent future accidents.
Relatives of Akeel Nanabawa, who also perished in the crash, described the report as “the first stepping stone.” They seek transparency and commitment to uncover the full truth, hoping it will help them heal.
Demetrius Danas, an aviation lawyer advising some families, expressed concern over the findings. Many survivors and relatives simply want answers. They’re grappling with immense loss and uncertainty as they search for closure.
The crash stands out as one of the deadliest in recent memory, particularly for British nationals—52 were among those who lost their lives. The preliminary report indicated that all crew members were deemed fit for duty after breath tests. Notably, no significant bird activity was detected in the area.
In light of this disaster, the UK’s Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, voiced confidence in the investigation, offering assistance to Indian authorities. Meanwhile, an Air India spokesperson reassured that the airline is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigations.
