Mark Your Calendars: Key Dates for the 2028 L.A. Olympics Competitions Revealed!

LA28 just unveiled the competition schedule for the 2028 Olympic Games, kicking off on July 14, 2028. This year, they’re shaking things up by starting with track and field events instead of the usual swimming. Track and field will take place from July 15 to July 24 at the Coliseum, while swimming is set for July 22 to July 30 at SoFi Stadium.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. PDT on July 14. It’s a unique setup, taking place at both the Coliseum and SoFi Stadium. The final swimming events will happen at 3 p.m. on July 30, wrapping up with the closing ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Coliseum.

Several sports, including cricket, will begin qualifying rounds before the opening ceremony. Cricket is making a comeback after being absent since 1900 and will be played at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, starting on July 12. Other early sports include soccer and basketball.

Flag football is another exciting addition, debuting during the first week from July 15 to July 22 at BMO Stadium. This scheduling minimizes potential conflicts with NFL training camps, which typically start in late July, allowing current NFL players to join Olympic teams.

This Olympics will be particularly important for U.S. viewership. Ratings dropped during recent Games held in Asia, with the Tokyo Olympics facing record-low numbers. However, interest surged at the Paris Games, suggesting a promising rebound for LA28.

“Today’s milestones energize us,” said LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover. He mentioned that more than 1 million young athletes have joined the PlayLA program.

As the excitement builds for the LA28 Games, the full event times will be published later this year. Interested viewers can keep an eye out for details on volunteering and ticket registration, expected early in 2026.
