Hackers took over Elmo’s X account recently and posted offensive messages, including racist and antisemitic threats. Sesame Workshop, the non-profit behind Sesame Street, is working hard to fix this issue.
A spokesperson confirmed the hack: “Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages. We are working to restore full control of the account.” Elmo’s followers, who number about 650,000, were shocked to see posts unlike the usual kind, which spread joy and kindness.
The account wasn’t just a hack; it also included bizarre mentions of Jeffrey Epstein, calling for the U.S. government to release more information about him. These tweets were soon taken down, but a link to a Telegram channel run by the hacker still remained on Elmo’s account.
Social media platforms like X, owned by Elon Musk, have had issues protecting important accounts. Last year, high-profile users like British MPs faced similar attacks, with their accounts being used to promote cryptocurrency.
Elmo’s account had been a beacon for mental health discussions. Just last year, he sparked engagement by checking in with a simple question: “How is everybody doing?” His post even got responses from public figures like Joe Biden and Chance the Rapper.
This incident raises serious questions about online security, especially for accounts tied to beloved figures. Experts emphasize the need for better protections. According to a recent survey, 62% of users worry about their accounts being hacked. As we navigate a digital world, the safety of our online spaces becomes increasingly vital.
