Exciting News: LA Tech Joins the Sun Belt Conference – What It Means for Fans and the Future!

Louisiana Tech University is set to join the Sun Belt Conference, a move that is creating excitement among fans and athletes alike. This decision, approved unanimously by the Sun Belt Board of Directors, means Louisiana Tech will become part of the conference by July 1, 2027.

Commissioner Keith Gill expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Welcoming Louisiana Tech back to the Sun Belt makes sense geographically and historically. This addition revives old rivalries and strengthens our conference.” Louisiana Tech will join 13 other institutions, including notable schools like Appalachian State and Georgia Southern, after Texas State’s recent move to the PAC-12.

President Jim Henderson shared a positive outlook on this transition. He highlighted that the move offers Louisiana Tech’s athletes more consistent competition with nearby teams. It also enhances logistics for players, coaches, and fans, making it easier for everyone to participate and support their teams.

The benefits extend beyond sports. The change will help boost ticket sales for local matchups, draw in alumni living in the area, and support recruitment efforts. Athletic Director Ryan Ivey noted, “This is about more than just competition. It’s about creating engagement and reducing travel for our student-athletes.”

Louisiana Tech competes in 16 NCAA Division I FBS sports and has a rich history of success. In the last five years, the university secured four conference championships, especially excelling in baseball with three titles. The sports program is on an upward trajectory, aided by over $325 million in campus improvements, including $100 million specifically for athletic facilities.

Academically, the institution also shines. Louisiana Tech achieved noteworthy results in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate report, with six programs earning perfect scores. This combination of athletic and academic success reflects the university’s commitment to excellence.

Historically, Louisiana Tech was part of the Sun Belt from 1991 to 2001, competing in various sports during that time. The move back to the Sun Belt is a return to those roots, fostering interactions with regional rivals within a driveable distance, making attendance easier for fans.

In summary, this transition means a bright future for Louisiana Tech’s athletic programs. With enhanced rivalries, improved facilities, and strong academic performance, both athletes and fans have a lot to look forward to.
