On Tuesday afternoon, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi appeared in a Lucknow court for a defamation case related to his comments about the Indian Army. Shortly after he arrived, the court granted him bail.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma issued bail on two personal bonds of ₹20,000 each. Gandhi spent about 30 minutes in the courtroom following his surrender.
He flew in from Delhi, making his way directly to the MP-MLA court. The court had previously summoned him for remarks made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra, but he had missed the last five hearings. This led to a renewed order for him to attend.
After bail was granted, Gandhi left and headed to Amausi Airport. His lawyer, Pranshu Agrawal, had requested a waiver from personal attendance, but the court denied that request.
Outside the court, some tension arose when police stopped the convoy of Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari and Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra. After a brief disagreement, they walked into the court on foot.
The defamation case, filed in August 2023 by retired Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Director Uday Shankar Srivastava, stems from comments Gandhi made during a speech on December 16, 2022. He claimed that “Chinese soldiers were beating up Indian soldiers” following a clash between Indian and Chinese troops earlier that month.
Srivastava argued that Gandhi’s statement was misleading and detrimental to the morale of Indian soldiers and their families. In contrast, the Indian Army stated on December 12, 2022, that its troops had effectively defended against attempts by Chinese soldiers to invade Indian territory.
The ongoing case highlights significant issues around free speech and the responsibilities of public figures. As discussions continue, it raises questions about how political commentary can impact national security and public sentiment.
