South Africa Champions Climate Priorities at G20 Environment Summit: Key Highlights and Impact

South Africa is stepping up in a big way with its role in the upcoming 2025 G20 Presidency. This is not just another meeting; it’s a chance to tackle global environmental issues together. From July 14 to 18, 2025, the country hosted the second technical meeting of the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) at the beautiful Kruger National Park. The meeting set the stage for important climate discussions ahead of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November.

As South Africa leads the G20 starting December 1, 2024, the focus is clear: urgent action on interconnected crises like poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation. The theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability” highlights this commitment.

Dr. Dion George, South Africa’s Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, is guiding the ECSWG. This group is crucial for advancing the environmental goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They are focusing on big challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

At the July meeting, five key priorities took center stage:

1. Biodiversity and Conservation: Implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework to support conservation and a sustainable biodiversity economy.
2. Land Issues: Actions to achieve land degradation neutrality to combat desertification and restore ecosystems.
3. Waste Management: Emphasizing sustainable chemical use and exploring waste-to-energy technologies.
4. Climate Change and Air Quality: Discussing climate resilience, adaptation, and improving air quality.
5. Marine Management: Tackling marine pollution and promoting ocean governance.

More than 250 delegates from various countries and organizations participated in the meeting. They shared progress, best practices, and identified ways to work better together. South Africa’s role in facilitating these discussions shows its dedication to finding practical solutions to environmental challenges.

The G20 countries account for about 85% of the world’s GDP and two-thirds of the population. Their actions can significantly impact the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. However, progress has been slow. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged for a new approach to accelerate action.

South Africa’s leadership in the G20’s ECSWG is critical. The insights gained during the technical meetings will be instrumental in promoting global climate finance and embedding sustainability in economic recovery efforts. By fostering international cooperation, South Africa is not just advocating for its climate agenda; it’s contributing to a larger push for a sustainable future.
