James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Sparks Over 500% Surge in Dog Adoptions: How Krypto is Inspiring Compassionate Choices

David Corenswet may be the face of James Gunn’s “Superman,” but Krypto, Superman’s canine companion, is making a real splash too. The film has sparked a newfound interest in dog adoption.

Krypto is a lovable yet mischievous pup who sometimes gets Superman into trouble but always has his back during battles. After the film hit theaters, many viewers were inspired to consider adopting dogs like him.

Data from the dog training app Woofz shows a remarkable increase in searches for dog adoption. After the film’s opening weekend, searches for “adopt a dog near me” soared by 513%, and specific inquiries for “rescue dog adoption” jumped 163%. Moreover, there was a 31% rise in searches for “adopt a puppy,” with a staggering 299% spike in interest for “adopt a schnauzer.” This is notable because Krypto is based on a mix that resembles a schnauzer, even though he’s created entirely using CGI.

Interestingly, Krypto’s character was influenced by Gunn’s own rescue dog, Ozu. While writing the film, Gunn faced challenges training Ozu and imagined what life would be like if his dog had superpowers. This blend of personal experience and creativity gave birth to Krypto.

Woofz’s CEO, Natalia Shahmetova, emphasized the importance of commitment when adopting. She cautions that while excitement may drive the surge in interest, adopting a dog is a long-term responsibility. Puppies need love, training, and time to adapt and thrive in their new homes.

To encourage this movement, Warner Bros. partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to cover adoption fees from July 1-10, just before the movie launched. During that period, 454 pets found loving homes across the U.S.

The positive impact of Gunn’s films on animals isn’t new. For instance, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” received accolades from PETA for raising awareness about the cruelty of animal testing.

With “Superman” now in theaters, the ripple effect of Krypto’s charming character could lead to countless lovable dogs finding their forever homes.
