The live-action Legend of Zelda movie is generating excitement as Nintendo and Sony announce their lead cast.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s boss, shared on X that Bo Bragason will portray Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will take on the role of Link. He even posted pictures of the two, dressed up for their roles.
“I’m thrilled to announce that Bo Bragason-san will be playing Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san will be Link,” Miyamoto said. “I can’t wait to see them on the big screen.” The film is scheduled for release on May 7, 2027.
Bo Bragason is known for her work in the BBC One series Three Girls and Disney+’s Renegade Nell. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Benjamin Ainsworth gained fame from Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor and Flora & Ulysses.
Director Wes Ball, who directed last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is at the helm of this project. The film aims to adapt the beloved Nintendo game that began in 1986, focusing on Link and Princess Zelda’s quest to save Hyrule from the villain Ganon.
This movie isn’t just a nostalgic trip; it reflects an ongoing trend of turning popular video games into films. An academic study from 2022 revealed that game adaptations have increased by over 65% in recent years, signaling the industry’s confidence in this crossover.
The excitement around the casting choice has also sparked discussions on social media, with fans expressing their hopes and concerns about how the iconic characters will be portrayed. Some believe that Ainsworth’s role could bring a fresh take on Link, while opinions about Bragason’s portrayal of Zelda are varied but passionate.
With Sony distributing the film and production being led by Avi Arad along with Miyamoto, there’s a lot of pressure to please die-hard fans. The challenge will be crafting a story that honors the game while bringing something new to the audience.
As the release date approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting more news, creating buzz in gaming forums and on platforms like Twitter. The Legend of Zelda is not just a game; it’s a cultural phenomenon that continues to evolve.
