In Missouri, there’s a new opportunity to help tackle food insecurity. The Missouri Department of Agriculture has launched the Food Insecure Cost-Share Grant. This competitive grant aims to support projects that boost farmers’ markets and local economic development to reduce food scarcity.
The grant is designed to promote a thriving local food system. It encourages projects that increase food production and access within communities. This can help not just individuals but also foster community growth.
Grants of up to $50,000 are available. However, applicants can only get reimbursed for 75% of their project costs. The deadline for applications is August 27, 2025, and all funded projects must be finished or nearly done by March 31, 2026.
For urban areas designated by the 2020 United States Census Bureau, $500,000 is available. Rural areas can access $100,000. If you’re unsure if your location qualifies, it’s best to reach out directly to Amanda L. Wieberg at (573) 751-7794 or via email.
The grant reflects a larger trend in the U.S. As of 2021, roughly 38 million Americans faced food insecurity, a significant increase from previous years. Experts believe local initiatives can play a key role in addressing these challenges. “Local solutions empower communities to take charge,” says Dr. Emily Smith, a nutrition expert. “When people engage directly with their food systems, they can create lasting change.”
More details, including the application and guidelines, are available on the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s website.
In summary, the Food Insecure Cost-Share Grant is a step toward building stronger, healthier communities in Missouri. By investing in local projects, we can tackle food insecurity head-on.
