Tragic Heroism: Former Pro Baseball Player Chase Childers Loses Life While Rescuing Swimmers in South Carolina

A former baseball player and father of three, Chase Childers, tragically lost his life trying to rescue swimmers caught in a rip current off South Carolina’s coast. This incident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday at Pawleys Island, a popular beach destination.

According to the Pawleys Island Police Department, Childers ran into the ocean alongside another Good Samaritan to help four or five people struggling against the strong current. Sadly, he became trapped himself. His body was recovered around 6:15 p.m., after a search involving local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Chase Childers was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009 and played minor league baseball before serving as a police officer in Cobb County, Georgia. His heroic actions have prompted many in the community to express their sorrow and respect for his bravery.

Rip currents, like the one that caught Childers, are powerful channels of water that can pull swimmers away from shore at speeds reaching 8 feet per second. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that fighting against these currents can lead to drowning.
