Trump Administration Set to Overhaul Food Safety: What Revoking Key Standards Means for You

The FDA recently announced plans to scrap outdated standards for over 50 food products, calling them “obsolete and unnecessary.” This decision marks a significant shift, as these rules defined what ingredients and processes must be used in things like dairy, baked goods, and canned goods.

Historically, the FDA established these standards way back in 1939 to prevent food companies from cutting corners. For example, during the Great Depression, some manufacturers sold jams that contained very little fruit. These standards aimed to protect consumers by ensuring what they bought was consistent with their expectations.

However, many now argue that these standards hold back innovation. In fact, according to the International Dairy Foods Association, about one-third of the current standards impact dairy products. For years, the dairy industry has pushed for change, claiming that strict rules can label innovative products as “misbranded” just because they don’t fit into traditional definitions.

Take cheese, for instance. There are specific moisture and fat requirements for different types. “Cheddar” cheese, for example, must have no more than 39% moisture and at least 50% fat in the remaining solids. This rigidity constrains manufacturers who want to create better and healthier options.

More than a quarter of the standards being eliminated relate to cheese. Other products affected include canned fruit juices and vanilla extract, many of which aren’t even available in U.S. grocery stores anymore.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary stated that these outdated standards no longer protect consumers and that it’s time for a more sensible approach. In recent years, the FDA has revoked standards, though not on this scale. Last year, they discontinued the standard for frozen cherry pie.

This move comes amid broader trends in the food industry. A 2022 study indicated that 62% of consumers want food manufacturers to push for more transparency in ingredient sourcing. With modern labeling, consumers can now see nutritional info, potential allergens, and ingredient lists more clearly.

By removing outdated standards, the FDA aims to foster innovation and improve food options for consumers. It’s an exciting time in the food industry as manufacturers can now explore healthier alternatives without being hindered by rigid rules.
